An Unfailing Mission

God’s Global Mission

“We strive to offer our customers the lowest possible prices, the best available selection, and the utmost convenience.” This is Amazon’s mission statement. Most every business has one. A mission statement clarifies their purpose and informs their daily activities. Maybe you have developed a mission statement for your life. Have you ever considered what God’s mission statement might be? Whether we call it a mission statement or not, God clearly states his intentions for the world in Malachi 1:11: “For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be great among the nations.”

The Creator God of all nations is out to make His name great among all those nations. What does this look like practically? People from all nations (i.e., ethnic groups) turning from their sins and trusting in Jesus Christ for salvation, that they may know, love, and glorify God.

Paul’s Submission to the Mission

The Apostle Paul caught this God-sized mission for the world: “We have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations” (Romans 1:5). God’s mission became Paul’s mission, which then informed Paul’s daily activities. Paul devoted his life to minister the gospel to the nations, making it his ambition to preach where Christ had never been preached Romans 15:20). For the sake of the glory of God, Paul could not sit by while the nations glorified vain idols in ignorance to the name that is above all names.

What’s Your Mission Ambition?

If you truly worship the God who desires his glory among all peoples, his desire will become yours. Currently, there remain billions of people who have never heard of the biblical Jesus. Some have never heard his name even once. Others have heard of a “Jesus,” but they are taught that he is not divine, did not die on the cross, and did not rise from the dead. Following the logic of Romans 10:14, they will not be able to call upon the name of the Lord until someone goes to them with the gospel. Hence, our Master and King has given us a great commission in light of his great mission.

God calls you to set aside your small ambitions in order to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19a). Take part in the greatest mission in all the world by either sending or going to the unreached nations. Because it is God’s mission, it will never fail. In fact, every other man-made mission will fade into the dustpan of eternity, but God’s praise among all peoples will endure forever. May God’s mission be your ultimate ambition! “All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God” (Psalm 86:9-10).
